Commonwealth Bank to introduce smartphone ATM withdrawals

Commonwealth Bank will allow customers to withdraw cash from ATMs using their smartphones for the first time, under a new update to the bank’s mobile apps.

Interesting to think if this will coincide with some third-party Touch ID capability to further increase security of these kinds of withdrawals.

Bank smartphone apps in general would greatly benefit from a basic authorisation feature provided by Touch ID.

Touch ID Wish list

  • Lockable Keychain items that will only be accessible once a fingerprint is verified. Great for banking and enterprise scenarios. Needs Keychain API overhaul, completion block implementation.
  • Keychain Credit Card items with aforementioned lockable attribute.
  • "Pay with iTunes™" or IRLP (In-Real-Life Purchases). Horrible concept names, massive possibilities. A vertical Apple would venture into?

Being able to lock a Keychain item requiring a fingerprint could possibly be the first basic API access developers get to Touch ID. I suspect that will be the kind of level of access developers will get to Touch ID, indirectly through other OS managed service API's.

Update: iCloud Keychain already supports credit card storage. Forgot about that. Thanks Sam.
